A sheriff in Catahoula Parish keeps a locked drawer for the things the river will not give back. One of them is his daughter.
When a body comes up in the Black River, the parish wants it filed as an accident. JD Young does not file it. He walks the banks, the grain elevator, the old men's table — and finds a recruitment that has been running since 1998, warm as a handshake and built to survive the man who built it.
